Happy National Nutrition Month®!

Happy National Nutrition Month®!

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics deems the month of March as National Nutrition Month®. This year’s theme is “Celebrate a World of Flavors,” honoring cultures from around the world with the intent of experiencing new and tasty ways to nourish our body. It is also a time to recognize that each of us is unique and has different goals, bodies, backgrounds, and tastes!

Over the course of the month, there will be a different focus each week to learn new skills and tactics surrounding nutrition and how to incorporate it into a healthy lifestyle.

Week 1: Eat a variety of nutritious foods each day

Week 2: See a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

Week 3: Plan your meals and snacks

Week 4: Create tasty foods at home

Week 1 & 2

Eat a Variety of Nutritious Foods Each Day

During week one, we will be focusing on the importance of a varied diet as it is necessary for your body to be well-fueled and have the nutrients it requires to function. It is vital to consume a diet that contains healthful foods from all food groups. This means not cutting out whole food groups, like carbohydrates or fat – your body needs these to function properly! Instead, try to include a portion of all macronutrients in every meal: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Ideally, half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables and half should be grains and protein. Doing this will result in satiety, proper nourishment, and satisfaction.

See a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

A RDN is a specialist that has extensive knowledge and education in food and nutrition and the ways that what we eat influences the health of our body. Anyone can benefit from seeing a RDN, especially if you are curious about ways to improve your health and gain inspiration on consuming a varied and diverse diet. If you live on campus, you can see Brittney Sly, Housing & Dining Services’ Dietitian Nutritionist, for free! If you live off campus, ask your doctor for a referral to a RDN and check out the programs and availability at the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center at the CSU Health Clinic. It is important to find a RDN who specializes in your unique needs and can help you meet your health goals.
