Pack It, Store It, Donate it

With the school year coming to an end, it’s almost time to start preparations for leaving your residence hall. While emptying your closets and putting your belongings into boxes, you may find that you come across some items that you no longer need or want to take with you on your next journey – wherever you find yourself living this Fall. Because move-out week coincides with finals week, it’s understandable and normal to feel overwhelmed and stressed by all the chaos that this week can bring, and it may be feel tempting or “easier” to simply discard any unwanted items in the dumpsters; however, in doing so, thousands of pounds of unwanted items in perfectly good condition are put to waste each year, which could instead be donated and loved by someone new.

Housing and Dining Services wants to make things easier for you, while simultaneously helping you take part in more sustainable move-out practices. That’s why we partner with local non-profits each year to host “Pack It, Store It, Donate it”, a donation program in which multiple donation stations are set up around campus during move-out week for students to leave their unwanted items at. At the end of the week, all items left behind are redirected to charity-based donation centers…instead of redirected to the landfill.

Six donation stations will be set up across campus—three on the South side and three on the North side—and will be open from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Wednesday through Friday (May 11th – 13th). They will accept clothing, toiletries, school supplies, small electronics, non-perishable foods, etc.  There will also be two E-Waste recycling bins available on Friday from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm located on both the North and South side of campus accepting small electronics with cords/batteries. Note: Micro fridges will not be accepted.

Be on the lookout for an email and posters with more information about the donation program, as well as a map providing specific locations for donation stations.

Happy donating!
