Bike Safety & Theft Prevention

By Cpl. Derek Smith, CSUPD Support and Events Services

Bicycling is a great way to get around campus, but CSUPD has seen a drastic increase in bike theft recently.  Please protect your property with a U-lock. They are much more secure than cable locks which can easily be cut by thieves. Committed thieves can still use tools to get through a U-lock, but it is much more difficult and time consuming compared to cable locks.

This picture provides you with an example of a U-lock being used properly. The U-lock needs to go through the frame of the bike, the bike rack, and ideally the front tire. This bike has an additional U-lock going through the rear wheel and frame as well. Please help us by working together to reduce bike theft, protect your bike with a quality lock, and please ride safe while getting around campus. Remember that bikes are considered vehicles by the State of Colorado and are required to follow the same rules and regulations as motorized vehicles. Have a great semester, we are glad to have you on campus and Go Rams!
